Not repetition but insistence

By  Henny Burnett 2020
Not repetition but insistence: The title refers to a Gertrude Stein quote "The inevitable seeming repetition in human expression is not repetition, but insistence." The same mark is made using black ink and a calligraphy dip pen, a repetitive action yet each mark is individual and insistent as it works it way around the islands of ink washes and pigment stains, creating a map or cartography across the plane of the paper. The process of insistence brings order to the accidental stains and washes the paper already had from a previous use as a protective cover on the drawing table.
