Orbiting Woodlice

Chris Dunseath

'Orbiting Woodlice' is constructed from Mulberry Paper and Woodlice and is influenced by Theoretical Physics. The incorporation of actual Woodlice (dead) into the sculpture arose by observing that many of the Woodlice that inhabit my old studio would climb over my sculptures and appear and disappear in unexpected places almost like particles in Quantum Physics that seem to appear and disappear for no apparent reason. Although unintentional, the actions of the Woodlice seemed to suggest participation in the sculptural process so it was decided to embed Woodlice in the paper laminations of a ring orbiting a central core. It should be noted that no Woodlice were harmed during the making of this sculpture.
