Other Lands

36 page A4 concertina book, mixed media + a short video of same.

This book started as an experiment with improvised drawing using inks, water colours and pencils. Then I read Otherlands, A World in the Making by Thomas Halliday, a paleobiologist, on the history of the earth and the work rapidly became a celebration of the amazing and strange earth we inhabit. 

But halfway through the piece I entered a very different space, the Other Land of caring, loss, sorrow, bewilderment and bereavement, after my partner was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Eventually, many, many months after her death I was able to return to the piece, finish the drawing and make the video, thereby entering the new territory, the Other Land of the future.
