Out Of Our Earth (3-channel video installation, 38 mins., in progress) is an exploration of leaving- a home, a friend, your country, our planet- and blends fictional accounts and lived experience of migration. The work is a chorus of voices with parallel narratives focused on women’s experience, but speaking of anyone's predicament when staying is no longer possible.
The work combines material from live performance, text, narration and found footage with music from Even You Song, an apocryphal choral evensong based on interviews about space flight. The work is structured as a Welcome and Three Parts that follow the decision-making process from disquiet to fantasy, into belief. The work incorporates imagery of the artist’s daughter, Afro-futurist Sun Ra and comic-book character Halo Jones, who leaves Earth and her friend to go into space.
