My portraits are a documentation through painting and drawing of myself, my friends and acquaintances. I concentrate on the formal aspects of painting including composition and arrangements of texture and colour. As well as likeness I aim to capture something of the individuality and uniqueness of each person.
I was inspired, in part, to paint 'Portrait' after a visit to the National Gallery in London. The profile and flat background colour makes reference to that form in 'Portrait of a Lady' (1470) by early Italian Renaissance artist Alessio Baldovinetti (about 1426-1499). This painting is in the National Gallery Collection
