Prydeindod

By  Paul R Jones 2014

Flags are used as signals to distinguish between the conquerer and the conquered. They act as a call to arms and galvanise nationhood. They also expose the dichotomies of inclusion and exclusion. In his 1966 publication Prydeindod, J.R. Jones alerts us to the fact that the concept of Welsh as an cultural marker was in danger of extinction. That the two enmeshed elements of territory and language that make up a culture, were gradually being eroded to the point that once their connection was broken, Welsh as a distinguishable identity would no longer exist.
