WALKING INTO OBLIVION: MADONNA OF QUEEN STREETOil on canvas, 80 cm x 60 cm approx., 2025 Children and caring, comfort and love. When our son was a small baby I took him on the train to Halifax. I was showing work with a group called Workshops on Demand. He didn’t like being in the sling. I became exhausted. Later my partner Paul drove up and the three of us came home in the car, together. I mention this because managing a baby and doing art definitely conflicted. There is only so much you can physically do. This woman and child were walking up Queen Street in August 2024. She seemed so sorted, with the baby facing forward happy and content. from behind she looked like a man wearing Timberland’s and a baggy check shirt, with long hair tied back in a pony tail. A baby toy dangling from her belt. A lot has changed since the 1990’s. Feminism has softened and artists can be parents.
