Reading Wheel is a reference to the ethos of the Festival of Thrift, using recycled cable reels configured into an installation of artists books. The cable reels have a direct connection with the industrial heritage of the area of Redcar and Cleveland. Taking the library’s collection at Kirkleatham Museum as a starting point for the installation, the ‘books’ present scroll like pages printed using archival material from the library and stores at Kirkleatham. Images of machines used in the printing industry & posters from the First World War are interspersed with useful thrifty tips. The pages combine traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques using silk screen printing and traditional letter press.
Reading Wheel was supported by Navigator North and Festival of Thrift using public funding by Arts Council England. Photo Credit : Jason Hynes’
