Refresh

By Susan Williams 2017
Ribbon is supported on canes on the beach near Goleta, Santa Barbara, California, USA. The ribbon appears as birds perching briefly on the canes, flying along the beach, a migration perhaps. This also reflects the way people visit the beach for recreation, a pause in the work-a-day routine or a vacation. The ribbons also relate to the palm trees in the distance reflecting their shape. The flat light gives this work the atmosphere of a mirage or apparition, its edges disappearing, almost ghostly and there is a strong sense of the ephemeral reflecting the sculptures brief life also. Alas the wind unexpectedly died after setting up, then returned when the ocean came in, the work showing surprising resilience.
