Saltworks

By  Katy Beinart 2013

Katy Beinart

The installation recreates technologies of salt production in Portugal, unchanged for centuries, whilst also inviting the viewer to reflect on the slow change of evaporation and crystallization – the cycle of 'drying out' salt usually takes 6-7 days. The salt, collected from the salinas of Aveiro, and Figueira da Foz, mingles with water collected from the Tejo river in Lisbon. Part of the 'Saltworks' project, which attempts to capture both the materiality, and poetics of salt. The work was made through field research in Portugal and a studio residency at Fabrica Braco de Prata in Lisbon in September 2013, and was shown at Plataforma Revolver, Lisbon from 26th September - 26th October 2013.
