Shoal, commissioned by Artlink in Hull/UK on the occasion of its 30th anniversary, is a work composed of stones donated by the public. The stones hover about four inches above ground. The curling shape is inspired by the flow of air into the gallery as people open the wide door and enter the space. The resulting form resembles that of Spurn-peninsula, a spit of land on the Holderness coast.
The stones represent the donors. Like the members of a society form groups and gather as family, friends or fiends the stones are assembled by form, shape and character.
