Solar Bingo

By  David Appleyard 2022 - 2023

Ink on paper, exposed in a south-facing window from the Winter Solstice 2022 to the Summer Solstice 2023 (183 Earth days). The work records the slow passage of time through solar exposure, with light and shifting environmental conditions leaving their imprint on the surface. Unlike most artworks, which are carefully preserved, Solar Bingo is designed to naturally degrade over time, embracing impermanence as part of its process. In this way, the piece gestures towards the sun’s vast lifespan, connecting fleeting human time to the slow, unfolding life of a star.

This work forms part of an ongoing series of experiments using the sun as both material and collaborator.
