Srebrenica. Acrylic. 2005. Srebrenica Will Be Remembered? Well, think again, and then come to this Court and cry.

By  Phil Whiting 2005 - 2023
In 2012 I was interviewing a young Muslim lawyer and her family on the veranda of their rebuilt house near Srebrenica, Bosnia. Her husband, also a lawyer, pointed across the valley and said "You see that house over there, well, 18 years ago the man who lives there walked into this house shot my father, my uncle and my brother and set fire to the house. I and my mother escaped. On most weeks I'll pass that man in the street or sometimes in the local supermarket. He's in complete denial and regards himself as the victim". An updated solo exhibition of my project 'Places of Mourning in the Western World' will be held at 'The Sewell Centre Gallery', Radley College, Oxfordshire between 12th Jan to 9th Feb. 2024.
