Stirling
Lights in a sequence flickered in the distance
Marking the runway in the darkness
Then a flare….
A soft drone becoming louder and louder
Punctured by crackle burst of flame
As the silhouette approached
500ft, 400,300, 200ft dropping
Dropping…..
Trail of black smoke,
Explosion, a propeller spun through
The air as an engine disintegrated.
The aircraft lurched to the right as
One wheel hit the tarmac
The pilot struggled for control
Fighting against momentum
Until the machine slowed
Ground to a stop
Voices…….
Scrambling inside
OUT!OUT!
OUT!
Men dropped through a hatch,
As the Stirling burst into flames
