By  Mick Petts 1996 - 1999

Steve Brockett

Dimensions
7M x 40M x 200M

The Pit Pony was developed for Parc Penallta during my time as Artist in Residence with Groundwork Caerphilly. Part of Groundwork's national Millennium Projects scheme. During the development of Parc Penallta it was proposed to shelter the events arena from the prevailing winds with a bund of 60,000 tons of coal-shale, my role was to animate this landform into a recreational landscape & sculptural icon which symbolised the final release of the Pit-ponies onto the mountainside. As soon as the sculpture was completed locals nicknamed it 'Sultan' after a prize-winning pony from Penallta Pit.
