Reinforced concrete, 25mm thick float glass, mirror
The Sundial evokes the connection between the earth and the sky, revealing changes in atmosphere and the rhythm of the days and months.
The play of light and shadow through and around it reinforces the viewer’s relationship to the seasons within an urban environment.
This £12,000 commission for Bethnal Green Housing Association is the frontispiece for their housing development. The sculpture is designed to reward continued contemplation over time.
Mile End is a diverse multicultural area, and this informed my approach to the design. The monolithic concrete and glass sculpture is the gnomon of a sundial, the timelines are laid out in the cobbles surrounding it.
