Recent science has observed synchronized electrical activity in an area just behind the root tip called the “transition zone” which may be the locus of the “root brain” first proposed by Darwin. The idea remains unproved and controversial. Plants may be exchanging signals in a network, the way that intelligence emerges from a network of neurons may not be very different, defining intelligence as the ability to respond in optimal ways to the challenges presented by one’s environment and circumstances.
