Telling Tales, 2023

Telling Tales is a moving image work made from still images of play with toy soldiers. Play engages memory and enactment like nothing else. ‘Telling Tales’ unfolds as a series of games with soldiers where the player is unseen. The viewer,therefore, occupies their position. The encounters that unfold are part of our collective memory - or a an act of trauma replayed in a re-telling of an event, almost like PTSD in a young child’s mind, who may have witnessed a war.
Shot unscripted on my studio table with natural light and phone camera, over 500 images from two evenings of play became an emotionally charged moving image piece.
