‘Tellus Nullius’ is a series of work filmed & photographed in a wild, remote region in far NW Scotland. The works include digital media in both still & moving image, with single & multi-channel video projections in immersive installations and screenings with ambient sound, in cinematic & site-specific alternative locations & gallery installations
The central work is ‘Tellus Nullius Tria’, an immersive 3 channel video installation first exhibited in 2023. The visual narrative represents the 3 spheres of Earth’s biospheric habitats of atmosphere, hydrosphere & lithosphere and their ecological interactions and evolutionary timespans. Inspired by the remote and wild landscape of Coigach & Assynt in NW Scotland. Here the three eco-spheres dramatically interact in an ancient elemental landscape where the science of geological evolution was historically established. Lithic & fossil remains speak Earth’s aeonic evolutionary timespans set against the eyeblink of the Anthropocene era, Tellus- the Earth itself, Nullius- territory unclaimed or unowned; denoting that we humans are merely co-tenants, and need to be custodians of this planet, with all the diverse riches & resources of its precious ecosphere.
The visual narrative weaves still & moving image into immersive sensory, hypnotically absorbing experience, engaging audiences mentally & emotionally to enter a state of reverie & wonder of our elemental, ancient Earth. This experience raises a liminal awareness of the extreme destructive effect of our human practices on habitat & species with increasingly devastating climate disruption
