The Blackboard Series 1-3

By  Phil Lambert 2016
These paintings are abstract paintings that were inspired by blackboards. They are built up in layers and, like a blackboard, each layer is never completely removed. The images are not representations but constructions, so like the information on a blackboard they are removed from the world that they are attempting to explain or institutionalised. They speak of past lectures or knowledge, and in fact draw on the history of composition, but presented alone and without the lecture they represent only an image of academia. They are formed using only the relationships within the canvas and the intention is to create images that refer to the potential within the 2D plane and remove everything except a history of the system that created it.
