The Bleeding Edge (conversations with a resident doctor)
A series of co-created sketches in discussion with a recently qualified doctor, to explore the reality of the night shift.
In the words of the resident doctor,
'...when you work overnight, the expectations on you are huge. You are often in environments where you are on call for maybe two, three, four hundred patients, who could potentially deteriorate, whilst also getting referrals from A &E and Emergency Departments. It heightens a feeling of desperation sometimes. You really, truly want to provide the best standard of care for someone, and you're trying everything you can, but you're getting, "No," "This isn't possible," "Sorry, on another day."
It sometimes feels as though it's you and the patient against everyone else. We are working in an environment that is very under resourced, so staff are often protecting their own interests and protecting their own workloads.'
