The Cabinet of Imagined Mirrors

By  June Nelson 2003 - 2004
The Cabinet of Imagined Mirrors is an octagonal chamber 3m in diameter, made for contemplation and intended to be adapted in relation to its exhibition space. Although it is an architectural object, influenced by 18th-century mirrored rooms, it is in effect a surround drawing. Images of mirrors and text, hover in the graphite & wax covered walls. These 'mirrored' walls do not reflect back a supposed truth to the viewer, but shadowy shapes which are hard to grasp. This image shows the Cabinet under construction during the residency "Watch this Space", Phoenix Arts Association, Brighton and includes a photograph of an ephemeral draped chandelier. The chamber has also appeared in this form in the 2006 Liverpool Biennial Independents but is adapted to whatever architectural space it occupies.
