The Catapult Tree

This was a site specific sculpture made in response to the Rhod 2013 show's theme 'Future Nature Culture'. I was taken by the spaces inbetween forms, the shapes and shadows thrown by the natural and functional features on the site. This work does not attempt to compete with nature, but highlight the forms using manmade materials. I wanted to make a patchwork of colour using recycled materials, that would stand out amongst all the green and at the same time sit comfortably in it's environment. The creases in the bag gave the piece an organic quality, as did following the contours of the branches. The bags moved in the breeze and were semi transparant and let the light shine through and shadows be cast on it's plastic skin. In a world of climate change and increasingly scarce resources, ours is a future where we have to make use of the things close to us, reconfigure rubbish, re-appreciate the everyday.
