The Moment you thought you understood it you realised you didn’t

This artwork was commissioned for an exhibition at Scaffold Gallery, Manchester. It required extensive research and the research was published alongside the artwork for this exhibition.
This video artwork examines the nature of Dark Energy. Dark Energy is believed to exist but it can’t be seen. Its very existence provides a conundrum and an opportunity for the artist. In a universe largely made up of Dark Energy, I have tried to capture and distill its essence, like some medieval alchemist.
In a world where we dance around complex theories and think that we can comprehend them, we perhaps have to admit that they are beyond our comprehension, the understanding belongs to a few theoreticians.
As with the ever-moving wave, it is impossible to identify the beginning and the end of it, it simply is, so with Dark Energy. It is an act of faith then that this artwork exists. And, as with all intangibles, the reverse is as good a way of understanding it as any. What is not dark energy? What is not dark and what is not energy. The reverse of dark is light and the reverse of energy is stillness. I have combined light and movement because we see with light and seeing reveals movement.
