The Spaces of the Unconscious-carousel kaleidoscope

By  Kathleen Fox 2010

Nick Fox

This multimedia work forms part of an installation at the Freud Museum. Housed within a perspex box it can only be viewed through a peephole which both restricts the viewing and, because of a combination of different lenses, enhances the illusion of space. The images themselves developed from a baby bird I found and superimposed on a Victorian photograph I discovered in a junk shop. The images, which combine drawing with the found photograph, are layered and illuminated. They revolve on a turntable and are reflected upward into a chromed cone. Accompanying sound by Gareth Fox has been created from the resonant quills of a metal porcupine that resides on Freud's desk in his consulting room.
