TIN MINE WASTE LAND

By Phil Whiting 1995

This oil on board painting is probably among the most abstract of all my paintings. It was purchased by The Belgrave Gallery and was exhibited alongside paintings by artists such as John Bratby, Maurice Cockrill, Henry Inlander, Francis Hoyland, Joyce Cairns in the Belgrave Gallery exhibition ‘10/Ten: Abstract Figurative’ in 2018.         “This painting is the reworking of the industrial landscape that can still be found in Cornwall but is often overlooked for the more accessibly picturesque. The visceral quality of the paint re-constructs the landscape as experienced by the artist and recalls the arduous labour of former mine workers.”  ‘10/Ten’ exhibition catalogue, Belgrave St Ives, 2018.
