To See What She Could See

By  Olivia Irvine 2021
This painting in oil and acrylic spray paint on linen shows children playing games in a school playground. It came about as I was researching places I used to live as a child. The research was part of a development grant from Creative Scotland to explore notions of family. When I visited my old school in Kilmarnock, I saw that it was knocked down although the railings were still there. I thought of the games we used to play including acrobatics, skipping, clackers and clapping rhymes. The title comes from a clapping rhyme which starts 'A sailor went to sea, sea, sea'.
