Torn

This is one of those paintings which underwent a process of almost violent spontaneous destructive force during it's development, tearing, incising, cutting, stitching and reinstating. It was an exploratory and cathartic process until I arrived in this 'state of being'. I had to work with the torn area and allow tares and marks to make their own statements without tidying up and 'polishing' the painting. I used warm tertiary colours whilst considering geometric form, feelings, touch, acceptance, belief, existence.

'Thrust' has strong structural elements with architectural associations, verticals, horizontals, squares and rectangles . They can be reminiscent of internal and external walls and rooms, places and spaces linked with a passage, a portal, a doorway. And the sensitive surface qualities create textures and feeling alluding to archaeology and limitless time and space, and drawn or incised lines and distressed areas of scratching are like well trodden paths.
