Tourist (2022)

By Jo Clements 2023
Tourist (2022) Commissioned by A Modest Show for the opening event of the British Art Show 09 2022 for the projected showreel at the preview afterparty at The Alan Hotel, Manchester. A line of text scrolls across an artificially pink sky. Taken from an American propaganda public information film from 1937 the words originate as a song sung by workers as they ‘march’ to work at a car assembly plant. The footage was taken in Crete originally to record an ambiguous, pointless piece of graffiti that is neither protest or endorsement. Shot in 2022 in a time of world turmoil and uncertainty, the congruence of notions of employment, leisure, military (marching), jingoism and the role the sea plays in the transportation of migrants are present in the work, making this technically simple film loaded with potential interpretations.
