Track 7 + White

By  Jonathan Gabb 2011
“To stigmatize abstract painting we must label it as decorative”. (Sedlmayr and Barnes/De Mazia) In continuation with his “cottage industry” method of making installations, Jonathan Gabb has ventured into a 2 dimensional realm of painting. In homage to the pattern and decoration movement led by artists Joyce Kozloff and Valerie Jaudon, this work is created in one simple gesture; a product of instinct or practical storage, Track 7 + White can be considered as an alternative or practical method of creating a circular shape on the pictorial plane. From instinctive “playing” or beginnings, this work is composed of dried cut strips of coloured paint wrapped in one continuous motion. With its ever decreasing spectrums radiating outwards, the work has an optical quality that at the same time engages the viewer with the object and the process of observation. “The work is made in the way a cotton reel or hose pipe is created, out of practical means: an everyday method applied to a traditional fine art medium”.
