Under A King’s Blue Moon
Under A King’s Blue Moon is painted on Welsh slate, allowing the stone’s dark surface, texture and irregularities to remain present within the image. Layers of colour form an atmospheric space that suggests moonlight passing across a nocturnal landscape, while luminous shapes emerge like distant fires, mineral deposits or half-seen apparitions.
The title evokes a rare celestial event, but also introduces ideas of power, inheritance and myth. The “king” remains ambiguous: a ruler, an ancient figure or a presence belonging to the landscape itself. Moving between abstraction and imagined landscape, the work treats the slate as both a physical fragment of the earth and a threshold into an uncertain, otherworldly terrain.
