Wassail, Allcott's Orchard, Kingston Seymour, Somerset

Wassail is a traditional Pagan ceremony conducted to ensure a good harvest of apples in the coming autumn. Evil spirits are scared away with as much noise as possible using pots and pans and gun shot. Pieces of toast soaked in cider are hung in the branches to attract robins to the tree as these are said to be good spirits of the orchard.
