The Wave is a symbol of regeneration and technological advance. Its form is inspired by the Brunel Railway Bridge, which can be seen from the site, and the tidal waves of the Tamar River. Its structure comprises aluminium fins bolted onto a central axis. The fins were milled at the nearby Devonport Dockyards, using state of the art technology more normally employed in making nuclear submarines. This echoes the technical excellence and industrial prowess the area was reknowned for in Brunel’s era. Glass lenses visually link the sculpture directly to the surrounding area. The local viewer is given a new perspective on their home through the distortions of the lenses.
