Woad=Weed

Thomas Turnbull's, local Innerleithen dyer, discovered how to dye wool blue, a skill that was recognised by the locals and mill owners alike. The broadside makes connections with the history of Woad and Caractacus, who initially led the resistance against the first Roman invasion covering himself with the blue dye to appear threatening. The term 'weed' is reportedly derived from the term Woad due to its invasive qualities. In many states in the USA, it is termed a noxious weed.
