Worry Bags or Swampy in a tree

By Jane Ostler 2026

Initially using paint in a break out way emulating the freedom of Howard Hodgkin's large sweeping colourful brush strokes, I quickly affirmed the paintings limits and edges, recalling his use of frames or windows, with bright red and magenta.  Co-inciding with ideas of climate break down, the anxiety it causes, and environmental apocalypse.  Recalling the hero Swampy, who lived in tunnels and trees to save them from developers.  Newbury Bypass (1996): He gained national fame after spending a week living in an underground network of tunnels and chaining himself to trees to try and stop the A34 road expansion.  Fairmile (1997): He spent days underground in a complex tunnel system to protest an A30 dual carriageway extension in Devon.
