Carl von Weiler, Monument Lower Platforms, 2003

Carl von Weiler selected by Judith King (2005)

Judith King selects the work of Carl von Weiler

For several years now, Carl von Weiler has been exploring an area between the video image, sound and sculptural object. Performative in nature, his work has often focussed on the phenomenon of gravity, particularly in relation to the de-materialised nature of both sound and the video image.

Often using techniques of inversion, both literally and in terms of our expectations, von Weiler variously attributes sound with a visual and physical weight or promotes the passive TV monitor to a status of structural importance.

His practice ranges from sculptural objects, sound and video works, to large-scale installations and small drawings, made for galleries/museums and off-site locations, both inside and outdoors.

Von Weiler's installations in the late 1990s in spaces such as Matt's Gallery and the Museum of Installation, London, are characterised by their staging of a mis-en-scene where the viewer became the participant, contingent to its interpretation. Recent projects include 'Monument', a two-part video installation at Central Station Metro station, Newcastle Upon Tyne, a part of the Arena public art initiative organised by the Samling Foundation and Baltic, Gateshead.

About Judith King

Judith King is a freelance curator and visual arts consultant who works mainly with English Heritage in the North East. She has curated four major art and design exhibitions at Belsay Hall, Northumberland - Living at Belsay in 1996, The Sitooteries in 2000, Sitting Pretty in 2002 and the most ambitious of all, Fashion at Belsay in 2004.

Thirteen of the countrys most inventive fashion designers responded to the stark splendour of the nineteenth century Hall, the historic gardens and the fourteenth century castle. From Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith, Zandra Rhodes and Stella McCartney to Eley Kishimoto, Agent Provocateur and Shelley Fox, FAB attracted much national and international critical acclaim and press coverage.

The visual arts consultant to English Heritage also covers the management of the Berwick Gymnasium Gallery Fellowships, including a newly funded International Fellowship from the Arts Council of England. The Berwick Fellowships are highly regarded and a prestigious opportunity for professional visual artists to make a new body of work in response to a dramatic and inspirational landscape. Previous Fellowships holders have included Mike Nelson, Perminder Kaur and Geraint Evans.

Also used as an advisor, curator and mentor, Judith has worked with many other national arts organisations and museums and is increasingly being asked to initiate projects or to suggest artists by commissioning bodies.
