Meet the Axis Team
Behind Axis are individuals united by a love for art and a belief in its potential. A collective of artists, curators, and creative outliers dedicated to making a difference.
Mark Smith
Executive Director
Since 2015, I’ve guided Axis’ transformation into an independent, self-financing charity that puts artists first. As a steward and strategist, I collaborate with the team to shape the changes we seek. My 25+ years in the arts have been spent collaborating across disciplines and sectors, striving to make art accessible to everyone and enriching the lives it touches.

Lucy Wright
Deputy Director / Social Producer
I joined Axis in 2019 following completion of my PhD at Manchester School of Art. Initially tasked with developing Axis’ provision around socially engaged art, I came to have a stake in other things ‘social’ at the charity, in particular hosting our live events programme, which I love. As a working artist myself, I’m committed to helping build a more equitable and caring art world and ensuring that artists have access to the tools they need to achieve their career and creative goals.
