Simona Brinkmann

Nottingham
Ideas-driven material practice exploring the relationship between bodies, objects and space.

Simona Brinkmann works primarily in three dimensions - sometimes also using light and sound. Her practice sits between sculpture and installation, with spatial positioning often being as important as the production of discreet sculptural elements.

Over the years, she has increasingly made use of a mixture of found and fabricated objects/materials - including industrial, commercial, domestic, orthopaedic, automotive, urban, or pest-control related. These are modified, deconstructed, remade, or re-presented in unfamiliar configurations.

The grounding principle of her approach is that ‘space’ (be it public, private, or hybrid) is never neutral, but rather a construct - mediated by objects and infrastructures that influence the ways we operate within it. Her work aims to metabolise this experience, paying particular attention to how such objects and infrastructures might be re-conceived, and how they themselves might be prone to being reframed, reimagined or acted upon, just as they in turn act upon us.

Born in Milan and based in Nottingham, Simona studied at London’s Middlesex University and Central Saint Martins. She has exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, with past projects including a residency at Fondazione Per L’Arte (Rome), Override at The Art House (Wakefield), and In-Ruins at the Scolacium Archaeological Park (Southern Italy).

More recently her work was featured in Gentle Revolts at Sheffield’s Bloc Projects and  Relay [2] at Platform A Gallery in Middlesborough, the latter supplemented by a limited edition released in collaboration with *Hardcopy.

She is a currently a resident artist at Nottingham’s Primary.
