ACME Studio Deptford
Shelley Theodore, visual artist with a special interest in contemporary photography

Feelings of loss and stillness have always been important concerns for me. These are long standing preoccupations in the way I think about my creative practice. Earlier work with photographs focused on aspects of looking such as windows, curtains and reflections. I began to use photocopying to collage two images together. I also worked on the photograph with pencil or crayon and in this way obscuring the image brought more attention to it. When my husband died I found myself drawn to photograph mannequins in shop windows. I walked a lot in those early days. The shop dummies looked a lot like how I felt. I have also been making short films using a super 8 camera and more recently on my phone. The idea of passing time is embodied in the process of making the work. Slow close looking is such an important part of what I do.
