Emi Avora

London

Having the urban landscape as their main subject matter, the paintings submitted do not only aim at the depictions of balconies and windows of commonplace late modernist apartment blocks but they mainly ponder on the quiet ambitions and the lost dreams of their inhabitants. The imagery mainly comes from found imagery and photographs taken in urban environments in cities that have  common architectural features and have also recently been challenged by a financial or political crisis. Despite the turmoil in these places the paintings are looking at the tranquility, the dreaminess often created by the hazy light. The canvas and linen used for the paintings is often previously stained and recycled, creating a patina on the paintings while the subtle chromatical changes and the use of multiple glazes create a gap between the real and the imaginary allowing a beam of hope to pass through the trivial and the every day.
