Our AI Ethics Framework
Putting artists first in an age of AI

Why this matters

AI is changing how we work, communicate, and create. At Axis, we believe these changes must never come at the cost of artists and the integrity of the work they create. This framework sets out how we use AI responsibly, guided by our values and our commitment to care, inclusion and transparency.

What we mean by AI (pronounced ay-eye)

When we say AI (Artificial Intelligence), we mean the ability of machines or software to perform tasks that would normally require human intelligence, including creating, analysing, or making decisions.

Our position

We use AI only where it supports artists, not replaces them.

We will not use generative AI to create artworks or visuals for Axis. If we need creative work, we’ll commission an artist; from our membership, network, team or board.

We do not permit the use of member content (images, text, or data) for training AI models. While we can’t fully prevent misuse, we’re exploring what’s possible, like blocking known AI scrapers to help safeguard artists’ work.

Our principles

  • Artists First – AI will never replace the creativity or value of artists.
  • Transparency – We will be clear when AI is used within our tools or platforms, and explain its role in supporting our work.
  • Fairness – We aim to avoid bias, support inclusivity, and use AI in ways that benefit everyone.
  • Privacy – We protect your personal data and follow UK data laws.
  • Accountability – People, not machines, will always make final decisions at Axis.

How we use AI

We may use AI tools to help us work more efficiently and better support our members. For example:

  • Streamlining internal workflows, like organising information or automating routine tasks.
  • Analysing large sets of data to spot trends or patterns.
  • Exploring ways to help artists better categorise their work for search engines.
  • Testing tools to support members directly, like answering common membership questions using AI.

How we decide

  • All major decisions about AI use go to our Board of Trustees.
  • We review this framework each year or when big changes happen.
  • Before using any new AI tools, we carefully assess potential risks such as bias, exclusion, or misuse.
  • We also aim to involve artists and members in shaping how new tools are introduced, especially when they might affect creative work or member experience.

What’s next

AI is evolving fast and so are the challenges and opportunities it brings. At Axis, we’ll continue to review how we use AI, adapt our approach, and explore how we can better support artists in understanding and responding to its impact.

We’re particularly interested in how AI affects copyright, advocacy, and tools that help without harm. We’ll also look for ways to amplify artist voices and share real experiences of working with or being affected by AI.

We’re also following sector-wide advocacy, including the work of DACS on AI and artists’ rights, and may take part in future events or campaigns that align with our values.
