AJ Stockwell
My current work re-imagines the relationship between human and more-than-human elemental bodies. In the studio I have been working on a series of ceramic sounding vessels that form part of an ongoing speculative folk fiction, 'Isle of Strangers'. This project is inspired by the geologic body of the Western Isles (the oldest rock in the UK), the figure of the Cailleach in Scottish / Gaelic folklore and research into queer ecology and neurodiverse experience of place.
As a solo artist I have exhibited in various galleries across the UK. Previously I have been selected for the Jerwood Staging Series (2019), the Rejoinders Wales-India research project funded by the British Council (2018) Standpoint Futures residency (2017) Plymouth Arts Centre residency (2017) and have contributed to artist led radio and publications such as Montez Press Radio (2020) and Takeaway, curated by Kelly Best and Herbivore (2021). Other recent projects include Sgeul ri Teachd / Future Story, collective community writing project funded by the British Science Association (2022-23) SUll Syllabus, a radical programme that explores alternative strategies for sustaining and restructuring practice (2021). I have been selected for an Interdisciplinary Residency at Hospitalfield in November 2024, supported by Creative Scotland and the Hope Scott Trust.
