Ayodeji Kingsley
My practice is a continuous dialogue between the tangible remnants of human existence and the intangible depths of the subconscious. At its core, my work is an act of storytelling, utilizing the medium of sculpture to navigate complex narratives and provide a platform for social commentary. By transforming discarded objects and industrial metals into intricate installations, I explore the intersection of ecological responsibility, collective memory, and the human psyche.
The materials I select are not merely refuse; they are vessels of "residual stories." Because these objects are fragments of lived lives, they possess a synchronising power that bridges the gap between my intent as a creator and the personal interpretation of the viewer. This shared history invites the audience to become part of the curatorial process, navigating a visual language where surrealism, proverbs, and paronomasia challenge traditional notions of form.
Within these layers, my work often serves as a double entendre for mental health by demonstrating that what is perceived as abandoned or "broken" can be reconstructed into a symbol of resilience.
My process is a rhythmic balance between the raw power of metal and the delicate, organic textures found in nature. This duality allows me to create pieces that are simultaneously robust and sensitive, reflecting our interconnectedness with the environment. I view the act of shaping form from formlessness as a meditative journey as a way to connect with the divine complexity of our world while advocating for a more sustainable and equitable future.
Ultimately, my sculptures are an invitation to look beyond the surface. I aim to provoke a sense of wonder and introspection, utilising art as a transformative tool to address societal issues and encourage viewers to delve deeper into their own consciousness. Through this alchemy of transformation, I seek to inspire a deeper understanding of our ecological footprint and the enduring power of human ingenuity.
