Kate Smith

Derby
Artist exploring gesture, mark & trace through drawing and installation.

My work is exclusively drawing based and investigates activity and gesture. Relating to the individual moving through space it reveals, recreates and documents ensuing residual marks and indicators of contact. Work ranges from large, meticuously rendered drawings to collections of accidental, intentional and found marks. Alongside the traditional, I am currently exploring how digital drawing - created with a digital pen and tablet - can be utilised as both source and outcome. The digital drawing has to be projected or printed in some way to become a physical piece of work and this has rasied a number of questions relating to surface, process, terminology, value and audience encounter.
