Lucy Austin

Bristol
Abstract painter and printmaker inspired by forms from the urban landscape. Works with a mix of drawing, print collaged onto canvas or paper.

My work begins with making a sketchbook which I find is a way to explore new language for a series of work.

My inspiration partly comes from living in the urban landscape; I mix up ancient parts of Bristol's architecture with contemporary graffiti appearing on urban industrial forms. I repurpose cardboard packing from domestic items, and I draw on parcel labels. I use oil sticks making drawing which resists water based acrylic paint, perhaps here there is a metaphor for our times. My paintings attempt to wrangle some of these different ideas in one coherent image.

The images are built up on canvas over a long period of time with layers of this collaged material. These fragments are pieced together slowly and combine elements of drawing, printmaking and painting.

The combination of materials I use include raw canvas, wax, felt, rice paper, cardboard packaging and gesso. The overlapping layers create a landscape which is rich and thoughtful within which there are elements appearing and disappearing under the surface.

I am currently working towards a new series of paintings and prints for a Solo exhibition in Sept 2025 at Ruskin Mill in Nailsworth, UK.
