Covid-19 art installation, 2020.
The installation is comprised of polythene sheets blowing in the wind, each held in place by a brick. The work was made to engage with the strong winds, also fortuitously responding to the brief 'temporary' set by The Royal Standard Arts organization. The forms resemble shrouds, bodies, effigies on a tomb, ghostly like spirits tossed by the wind, at times churning in agony or flowing like flames, comets, at times like a ballet, feather-like, gentle or again, still, strangely flat, peaceful, hypnotic. Associations include guardians, angels, shrouds, demons, fire, entities bearing great pain. The material itself adds to the darkness, being unbreathable and suffocating.
The installation was made at the height of the pandemic's 1st wave in the UK. The video itself is still under review. My thoughts during the pandemic often raised questions about mortality, my own death and anxiety that I may never see my children again.... remembering the death of my parents - hearing of the loss so many, in sorry, in pain, not even able to hold a hand or hug a loved one just one last time.
