84 / 62 - Mum / Me
The work comprises of 12 photographs. Mum and me holding one of my small, soldered copper sculptures. These images were carefully chosen from a large selection of photographs and positioned in such a way to reveal characteristics of our hands, our age, holding the sculpture to convey how different a form can be viewed from many angles.
The darkness of the shadows inside the form, the openings at both ends to allow light to pass through, are metaphorical elements and as important as the shape and form of the small sculpture.
The way the light reflects on the surface of the form creates a contrast, a pristine polished surface in relationship to our aging skin as it was, with no cover ups, no hiding of imperfections, just trueful. For me, the hand-held form has become a more intimate connection to someone than a sculpture that stands alone, and this work explores this timeless connection with my Mum.
