A Constellation of Broken Gates
A Constellation of Broken Gates — Installation Idea
A proposed wall-based installation bringing together a constellation of small paintings made on broken and repurposed Welsh slate. The irregular fragments would be arranged across the wall with deliberate spaces between them, creating a dispersed field rather than a single unified image.
The installation would be adaptable to the scale and architecture of each exhibition space. Individual pieces could be repositioned so that the gaps, rhythms and relationships between them become part of the work. Seen together, the fragments suggest an incomplete map, a group of thresholds, or objects excavated from an imagined archaeological site.
Painted with oil, oil stick, oil pastel and pigment, the works move between landscape, chamber, vessel, relic and architectural remnant. The proposal explores geological time, material memory and histories of labour and extraction, treating slate not simply as a support but as an active substance carrying pressure, fracture and traces of previous use.
