When you believe your presence is unacceptable you become in every way unacceptable and this leads to a compulsive focus on how to, if not become acceptable, at least mitigate the worst of the offence.  

Compliant behaviour is one way and ‘keeping up appearances’ is another - an onerous and endless repeat performance.
