A Medical History

By <a href="https://axisweb.org/artist/duckyelford" title="Ducky Elford" class="inline font-bold underline transition-opacity duration-100 hover:opacity-50 focus:opacity-50"> Ducky Elford </a> 2026

Reflecting on the personal trauma and grief of losing my mother to a terminal illness in early 2026, this multimedia installation explores themes of memory, identity, and the reality of medicalisation. The installation features an inflatable bed with a custom-printed blanket displaying a deeply personal, butterfly-themed eulogy in a pixelated typeface, accompanied by a looping animation of his mother's face on an iPad. This aesthetic carries over into an interactive, four-chapter animated film that documents the realities of her illness using pixel art, cell-phone notes, and symbolic red-and-blue colour-drenching. Finally, a large monitor displays AI-driven de-ageing and animation to interview my mother alongside a Muppet-inspired character, utilising an analogue, nostalgic distortion to critically examine her embrace of a conservative Christadelphian faith during my childhood.
